Should I Stay or Should I go – The Clash
Pt. 2
Posted below is the second page of Should I stay or Should I go from The Clash. In part 1, we talked about ways to tackle some the difficulties, namely the F chord, the rhythm, and the one A7 that pops up. Here we’ll talk about the power chords in the chorus.
There are two ways to tackle the power chords. The first way is to ignore them totally and stick to the 1st position chords D, G, A, and F, the same as the verse, but with more complex rhythm.
The second way is to have the student internalize the rhythm first, then apply the rhythm to one power chord, and experiment with shifting the power chord around the neck while maintaining consistent rhythm.
Often there are issues with the left and right hand, and synchronization. One hand waits for the other to get into position before strumming. This particular section is a great place to show the student that the picking hand should keep going, regardless of the fretting hand. Then, in time, with practice, they will meet where they should.
