Assessment lessons – The First Step Forward

The internet is flooded with questions and answers. Some true, some false. Entire websites are built trying to answer guitar specific questions, more forums are created that try to correct or dispel the questions, and on and on. We avoid that by directly addressing the specific student.

An assessment lesson is a short, informal way to meet your teacher, and discuss your needs as a musician. What you are looking to get out of lessons is specific to you, and cookie cutter methods will only get you so far. In the process of searching out a solution, you waste time, and often make more questions for yourself than true answers.

“I know what I’m looking for, how do I know your lessons are right for me?”

If you know what you are looking for, that’s awesome! One of the biggest issues facing most players is that they don’t know where their issues lay, or how to attain them.

“I don’t want to be a pro musician, but I want to be able to hold my own and jam with other people.”

Everyone has their own outlook on what they want to achieve by taking lessons. The best advice we can offer is that you will never know how far you can go until you try. You may find that by taking action with lessons, your expectations can dramatically change. 10 year olds can become songwriters, and doctors can become shredders, but it always starts with a first step.

“How can you help me reach my goals after a single 25 minute lesson?”

The 25 minute assessment is akin to a ‘first step’. We talk about your goals, get to know one another, and we ask LOTS of questions about your playing. The student shares frustrations. It’s very informal. Our goal is to help your reach your own expectations, and push you even further!

“Your 60 minute lesson rates seem high compared to (so and so at the music store).”

Typically, you take lessons weekly, in a structure that way. The teacher could be highly skilled, or not, as well as highly trained, or not. Low ball pricing typically would end up at 25.00 a lesson. 100 dollars a month, plus traveling to the location. Students that book a 1 hour session through us, have already booked an assement lesson, and their one hour lesson is a complete breakdown and examination of their specific goals, how to reach them, and all the materials necessary to do so, at no extra cost. You get a huge benefit in your time and cost by studying with us.

“I see your online lessons focus on a variety of topics and genres, but I’m only interested in (jazz/rock/metal etc).”

Your goals are your goals and there is no reason to think you can not attain them. We are not interested in turning you into something you don’t want to be.

“How much material should I expect to tackle for a 1 hour lesson?”

This varies wildly by the individual, their needs, and their ability and time to devote to practicing. More or close to a months worth of practice materials are provided, examined, and honed during a lesson.

“Do students often take more than one lesson in a month?”

Yes. After assessment, it is determined by the student how this is structured. There are NO objections or obligations from us as to how many lessons you want to schedule.

“I couldn’t afford to take more than 1 lesson with you a month, is it worth it?”

Yes! During assessment, this is taken into consideration when designing a routine.

“I only want to learn tunes, can you help me transcribe/learn the solos/?”

Yes, but, we often will go deeper than that.

“What do I get for becoming a member? Does it cost anything?”

Becoming a member is simple, easy, and FREE. You create a login and password, and with that you gain the ability to book lessons. We also provide content (also free) that only members can see. This content typically goes deeper than the lessons we post for the public. Notifications via email when new posts are available come to you directly. We also encourage community, and plan events that only members are privy to.

For the same price as a music lesson at a store (remember, teaching lessons is NOT their primary goal, but it is OURS), you can take a lesson from your couch with teachers who have years of experience motivating and nurturing players to become more than they initially thought possible.
